Court in Malawi sentences man to fine of MK200 000 for illegal possession of cannabis sativa

Magistrate court in Mangochi has sentenced a 35-year old Adam Dickson to a fine of MK200 000 in default to 18 months Imprisonment with Hard Labour (IHL) for being found in possession of cannabis sativa.

The offence is contrary to section 6 as read with section 19 of Dangerous Drugs Act.

Prosecutor Sub Inspector Maxwell Mwaluka tod the court that police arrested Dickson on 15 September at Makawa Trading Centre in the district following a tip off from the members of the general public.

Malawi News Hub had earlier reported the law enforcers seized 20 kilograms and some twists of cannabis sativa from the suspect.
The suspect pleaded guilty as charged before the court.

Concurring with the prosecutor who pleaded with the court for stiffer punishment, First Grade Magistrate Ronald M’bwana sentenced the convict to pay a fine of MK200 000 in default of 18 months IHL.

The offender is meanwhile in prison after failing to pay the fine.

Adam Dickson hails from Makawa Village in Traditional Authority Mponda in Mangochi District.
