A magistrate court in Mangochi has found guilty and sentenced to 6 years Imprisonment with Hard Labour (IHL) Andrew Manja for a criminal offence of burglary and theft contrary to section 309 (A) of the penal code of Republic of Malawi.
The court held that Manja and his friend who is yet to be netted broke into house of Mrs. Sakina Mbwana on April 28, 2017 in which they managed to steal a carton of U – Fresh soap and five packets of Spaghetti all worth MK 6 000.
State Prosecutor Sergeant Maston Chitsonga presented that Manja was caught with the help of people living around the house of Mbwana.
He further told the court that the accused’s friend successfully went away with the stolen items.
The accused, who pleaded guilty before the court, asked for leniency on grounds that he overstayed on remand.
However, the prosecutor pleaded with the judge to give stiff punishment bearing in mind that crimes of such kind bring fear in communities.
Concurring with the prosecutor, First Grade Magistrate Ronald Mbwana sentenced the convict to 6 years.
Andrew Manja hails from Mtafu Village in the area of Traditional Authority Mponda in the district.
