First Grade Magistrate Court in Mangochi has sentenced a 25-year old driver Gideon Kambewa and his conductor Golden Mponela aged 22 to a fine of MK 150 000 each in default to 12 months Imprisonment with Hard Labour(IHL).
The court heard that Kambewa and Mponela were convicted of exceeding number of passagers of the vehicle Toyota Noah they were travelling in.
Further, a state prosecutor told the court that the suspects were also found guilty for the charge from having fare paying passengers on board in a vehicle without road service permit class ‘A’.
The accused persons pleaded guilty to the offences but mitigated for lenient punishment citing that they take care of families.
Before sentencing the convicts to MK 150 000 fine, his worship first grade magistrate Ronald M’bwana concurred with the prosecutor in saying that the convicts need stiffer punishments to serve as a lesson to would be offenders.
Gideon Kambewa hails from Saiti Kadzuwa Village while Golden Mponela hails from Mtalimanja Village both in the area of Traditional Authority Mponda in Mangochi.
