Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba has urged The South African government to deal with illegal foreign nationals in the city.
Mashaba’s comments come in the wake of the torching of houses by residents of Rosettenville, south of Johannesburg.
The houses are said to belong to foreigners who are allegedly selling drugs and running prostitution rings in the suburb.
Speaking on a state owned television on Tuesday,Mashaba said the illegal foreign nationals will be arrested.
He added that government should make efforts to deport the illegal foreign nationals.
“I’m asking national government, Home Affairs in particular, as we arrest these people from tonight going forward, please tell us where to take them. Either issue them with documentation or get them out of our country. These criminal elements have no respect whatsoever for the laws of this country and our communities are so desperate. They can’t seek their houses, they can’t run anywhere. Where must our people run to…?”
