Court in Mangochi has convicted and sentenced a 50-year old Adingi Matulalansi to a fine of close to MK2 million in default to 40 months Imprisonment with Hard Labour (IHL) for being found in possession of drugs without licence.
Matulansi committed the crime contrary to section 65 of the Pharmancy, Medicines and Poisons Act.
According to Mangochi Police Spokesperson Rodrick Maida, the court heard that law enforcers conducted a search at Matulapansi’s residence at Mapira Village in Traditional Authority in the district where they found different kinds of medicine following a tip off.
All the drugs found with the accused were summed to the total of MK932 192.74.
The convict pleaded guilty to the offence but mitigated for leniency citing that he is a bread winner for orphan caring family.
However, state prosecutor Effort Kamphonje asked the court to submit stiff punishment bearing in mind that the calibre of the offence posses a danger to society.
In his submission, First Grade Magistrate Ronald Mbwana sided with the prosecutor and concequently fined Matulapansi MK1 864 385 in defualt to 40 months IHL.
Meanwhile the offender is in prison after falling to pay the fine.
Adingi Matulapansi hails from Idulusi Village in the area of Traditional Authority Jalasi in the district.
