One of the active members of the oppostion political party in Malawi, People’s Party (PP) Ackson Kalaile Banda have parried away reports that he is on the run.
Malawi Police recently told the media that they are haunting Banda on the allegations that he is part of the group that forged a bogus resignation letter in name of the country’s Vice President Saulos Chilima which went viral on social network platforms during Easter Holidays.
However, Banda dismissed claims that he is on the run saying he went out of the country through normal procedures using airport.
Banda wondered, “do you call it ‘on the run’ when someone has passed through normal procedure for his journey?”
“If I was wanted by police there is no way I could have passed through Chileka, I spent close to 4 hours at the airport. How could someone who is runing away from the law use the airport?”, added Banda.
Banda said that there is no warrant of arrest in his name.
He further went on to say he only heard from local media that he is wanted by police back home upon arrival at a location he declined to share with Malawi News Hub.Local media in Malawi on Monday reported that Banda has left the country for South Africa.
Banda accused the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) party of trying to silence him as he is being vocal to the ruling party.
“This is DPP plan of silencing their critics. They know I’m the strong character so they are just trying to silence me”, he said.
Banda left the country soon after police arrested Stella Asani who is also People’s Party member and confiscated her degital devices. Asani is suspected to be part of the same group.Banda said he left the country for his personal business and will be back in the country this week.
Ackson Kalaile Banda was People’s Party member of parliament candidate for Mzimba South East constituency in the 2014 elections and lost to independent candidate Rabson Chihaula Shaba who later joined the ruling DPP.
