A third grade magistrate court in Monkey-Bay, Mangochi has fined  Umali Maliki, MK 70 000.00 (Seventy Thousand Kwacha) for illegal possession of live ammunition contrary to section 12 as read with section 16(2) of fire arms act.

Maliki, 27, was found in possession of six rounds of live ammunition which were suspected to be of FN, R4 and MK4 riffles on March 26, 2017 at Mtakataka Turn-Off Roadblock.

The convict pleaded guilty to the charges but mitigated for leniency citing that he thought the live ammunitions were toys.

However, a state prosecutor Sergeant Mc Anthony Phiri told the court that Maliki’s offence calls for stiffer punishment.

Passing his judgement, third grade magistrate Samuel Kansire held that such kind of crime pose a threat on Malawi as a nation and consequently fined the offender MK 70,000.00 in default of 12 months in jail with hard labour.

Meanwhile, Maliki has already paid the whole amount.

Umali Maliki hails from Nkonde Village in the area of Traditional Authority Nyambi in Machinga District.
