Man fined MK300 000 for causing death by reckless driving in Mangochi

Magistrate Court in the eastern region district of Mangochi has order a 31-year old Peter Kalunga to pay a fine of MK300 000 in default to 12 month jail term form causing death by reckless driving which is contrary to section 126(4c) of the Road Traffic Act.

The court that Kalunga had hit a cyclist Maxwell Time aged 39 on October 30, 2017 as he was trying to overtake him along Monkey-Bay – Mangochi road.

Reports say that Time sustained head injuries and died in hospital bed at Mangochi District Hospital while receiving treatment.

The accused person pleaded guilty as charged but mitigated for a lenient punishment.

Concurring with the state prosecutor that the convict needed a stiffer punishment, first grade magistrate Ronald M’bwana sentence Kalunga toMK300 000 fine in default to 12 months Imprisonment with Hard Labour (IHL).

Peter Kalunga hails from Kimu Village in the area of Traditional Authority Mwambo in Zomba district.
