The Mzuzu Senior Resident Magistrate Court has sentenced Gift Sakala to 16 years imprisonment with hard labor for defiling a 12 year old girl.
The court heard that the girl is an epileptic patient living with her parents near Ekwendeni Trading Centre. On November 5, 2016, it was a market day at Ekwendeni and the victim left home for the market without the knowledge of her mother.
The convict took advantage of her condition and defiled her in a nearby bush. When the girl’s mother noticed that her child was not home she went into searching and was told she was last seen with Sakala. Later on the girl was found being defiled and the convict was arrested.
When Sakala appeared before court, he denied the charge but the court through state Prosecutor Sergeant Felix Senzani, found him guilty due to the evidence from the hospital. The state also paraded 5 witnesses. Senzani further told the court to slap Sakala with a stiff punishment for violating the right of a girl child.
In his judgment Senior Resident Magistrate Austin Banda, sentenced Sakala to 16 years imprisonment as a lesson to other would-be offenders and others with such an inhuman behavior.
Gift Sakala, 32 years, hails from Changunyuka Village in the area of Traditional Authority Mtwalo in Mzimba District.
