RECKLESS DRIVERS FINED FOR CONTRAVENING ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATIONS.

Mangochi First grade magistrate court on Tuesday January 30, 2018 ordered a 30 year old man Mc Donald Asima to pay a fine of K300,000 in default 24 months imprisonment with hard labour for contravening road traffic regulations.

The court heard through Mangochi Police prosecutor Sub lnspector Maxwell Mwaluka that, On January 29, 2018 around 0800hrs Mc Donald was driving a Mazda drifter pick-up registration number NP11478 from the direction of Chilipa heading Mangochi boma with several passengers on board.

Upon arrival at admarc market he was stopped by traffic police personnel who were executing their duties at the check point.

After inspecting the motor vehicle, the officers impounded it and also arrested Mc Donald for driving the motor vehicle without an insurance and endangering life of a person travelling on the road contrary to section 141 and 237 of the road traffic act respectively.

The same court also heard that, On the afternoon of the same day, Shukurani Mwatwana , 20  was driving a Toyota Noah station wagon registration number NB9559 from the direction of Mangochi boma heading Liwonde.

Upon arrival at Mpinganjira area he was arrested by traffic police personnel after being found that he carried fare paying passengers without road service permit class ‘A’ and also exceeded the carrying capacity of the motor vehicle with 5 more passengers which contradicts regulation 14 and 83 as read with section 167 of the road traffic act respectively.

All the drivers pleaded guilty to the charge

In his submission before sentence sub lnspector Mwaluka pleaded with the court to impose a heavy fine as lives of the passengers were in danger .

When passing judgement his worship first grade magistrate Ronald M’bwana concurred with the state. He therefore ordered Mc Donald Asima to pay a fine of K300,000 in default 24 months and Shukurani to pay K100,000 in default 12 months imprisonment with hard labour in order to serve as a lesson to them and other drivers of which they all paid.

Mc Donald hails from Misi katema village  T/A Mponda in Mangochi district while Shukurani comes from  Mwalero village in T/A Kalembo in Balaka district
