Road accident kills young girl in Mangochi

A 10 year old girl identified as Emily Laija in Mangochi has lost her life after being involved in a fatal road accident which occurred at Malembo area along Monkey-Bay-Golomoti road.

Police report says a Mazda Bongo registration number LA 6963 was coming from the direction of Monkey-Bay heading to Golomoti with 8 passengers on board.

Due to speeding, upon reaching Saiti village, the driver hit a pedestrian Laija, a standard 2 pupil at Chilumba Primary School who was crossing from left to right hand side of the road.

Laija sustained multiple fractures on the right leg and severe head injuries and died on the spot while the driver and all passengers escaped with no injuries.

Surprisingly the driver just sped off and abandoned the motor vehicle at Golomoti Trading Centre without reporting or handing himself over to the Police.

He was arrested few hours later by Monkey-Bay Police after they were tipped by the general public about the accident.

The Police is hereby advising the drivers to always follow road safety measures in order to reduce road accidents in the district.
