Mangochi second grade magistrate court in Malawi convicted and sentenced two men to four years in jail for stealing nine goats with an estimated value of MK180,000.00 Malawi Kwacha in the district.
The convicts , Grecian Sikelo(48) and Andiwochi lngeresi(57) committed an offence of Theft of Goats contrary to section 281 of the penal code (Malawi)
Mangochi Police prosecutor Constable Augustine Kagwira told the court that, On the night of November 23, this year unknown criminals broke into a kraal belonging to Mariam Ayatu of village Chaponda Tradiotional Authority Namabvi in the district and stole nine goats.
Ayatu discovered the following morning that her goats are missing when she wanted her son to take them for grazing.
The matter was reported at Namalaka Police Unit and investigations were initiated immediately. In the process the Police apprehended the two accused persons and also recovered 4 goats at Tumbwe village following the tip from members of the general public.
Appearing in court, both of them pleaded guilty. In mitigation they begged court for leniency however the prosecutor pleaded for a stiffer penalty.
When passing judgement his worship second grade magistrate Augustine Mizaya concurred with the prosecutor. He therefore sentenced each of them to 48 months imprisonment with hard In order to serve as a lesson to them and other would be offenders.
According to Mangochi police station deputy public relations officer,Amina Tepani Daudi they pair have started serving their four year jail term at Mangochi prison.
Grecian Sikelo hails from Village headman Kantandiwo in Traditional Authority Masasa in Ntcheu district while Andiwochi lngeresi comes from Village headman Tumbwe in Traditional Authority Namabvi in Mangochi district.
