A 14-year-old boy identified as Adam Mdala has died after drowning in Lilasi river in Mangochi.
Police public relations officer for Mangochi police station Inspector Rodrick Maida told Malawi News Hub that mother of the deceased ,Daina Afiya 30 ,in the morning hours of Thursday January 4, 2018 sent her son to a maize mill on a bicycle.
On his way the deceased failed to negotiate a corner at Lilasi bridge due to cruising ,as a result of malfunctioning of brakes he ended up falling into the river.
The on lookers rushed to the scene and instantly took the deceased and his belongings out of the river.
Then deceased was taken to Katuli health facility where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Postmortem conducted at Katuli health facility revealed that death was due to suffocation.
Meanwhile Mangochi police is appealing to parents and guardians to make sure that their bicycles are roadworthy before surrendering them to young ones for use to avoid reoccurrence of smilar avoidable incidents.
The deceased hailed from Mpwakata village, Traditional Authority Katuli in Mangochi district district.
