Easter Sunday’s celebrations unexpectedly brought some sad news after a boat carrying over fifty members of The Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP) from Rumphi drowned in Lake Malawi around 16:30 hours on Sunday April 16, 2017.
The boat drowned between coast area of Mlowe and an island known as Tchalo on the Lake.
Confirming the incident to Zodiak Malawi, Deputy Commissioner of Malawi Police in the north Charles Mpezeni explained that the people travelled to Mlowe for Easter prayers and the boat drowned on their way back to the island.
The police managed to rescue 8 individuals and found 5 dead bodies but were yet to establish the cause of such accident though suggested overloading as the cause.
Some information indicate that it had been heavily raining in the past week which maybe a possible cause of the tragedy.
