First grade magistrate court in the eastern region district of Mangochi has sentenced a 46-year old Zimbabwean man identified as Andrew Thomson to a fine of five hundred thousand kwacha (MKW 500,000.00) in default to 36 months in jail.

Thomson was found guilty of causing death by reckless driving contrary to section 126(4a) of the Road Traffic Act.

Maxwell Mwaluka, a state prosecutor at Mangochi Police Station, told the court that Thomson had hit an 8-year old Silaji Saidi with Toyota Hilux registration number BU2238 along Chiponde – Nselema road in the district.

The court heard that Saidi, who died on the spot, sustained severe head injuries.

The prosecutor pleaded with the court for stiffer punishment.

Passing his judgment, magistrate Ronald M’bwana sentenced the convict to MKW 500 000 in default to 36 months Imprisonment with Hard Labour (IHL).

Meanwhile Thomson has been freed after  paying the fine.

The bereaved family is expected to get MK 150 000 compensation from the fine.
